Is OKX safe and legit?

OKX (formerly OKEx) has operated since 2017 and is one of the largest exchanges by volume. It publishes proof of reserves regularly, and you can verify your own balance with its Merkle tree tool. It holds licences or registrations in several jurisdictions. Still, no centralised platform is risk-free, so spread large holdings and consider self-custody.

Security setup checklist

  • Authenticator app (2FA) for login and withdrawals.
  • Anti-phishing code: genuine OKX emails show your secret phrase.
  • Withdrawal allowlist: withdrawals only go to addresses you pre-approve.
  • Unique strong password that isn't reused anywhere else.
  • Official verification: check any “official” link or account with the in-app verification tool.

1. Pig butchering

A stranger builds trust online, then introduces a “great platform”. Small withdrawals work at first. Big ones are blocked by “taxes” or “unlock fees”. If someone you met online is pushing an investment, it's a scam.

2. Fake apps and sites

Search ads and chat links can lead to near-perfect copies. Only use okx.com and the official app stores.

3. Fake support

Real support will never DM you for codes, ask you to move funds to a “safe account” or install remote-access apps.

4. Trading mentors and signal groups

Screenshots of huge profits, “VIP strategies” and requests to manage your account usually end in liquidation or stolen funds.

5. Money mule jobs

“Easy commission” for receiving and forwarding money means laundering criminal funds, which is a crime in most countries.

6. Discounted USDT

Below-market USDT is often stolen or laundered. Buying it can get your accounts frozen.

7. Fake airdrops and wallet drainers

A “claim your airdrop” link asks you to sign an approval, and then your wallet is emptied. Reject signatures you don't understand and revoke old approvals.

8. Ponzi schemes

Fixed high returns plus referral rewards means earlier investors are paid with newer investors' money.

9. Recovery scams

After a loss, “hackers” or “lawyers” offer to recover funds for an upfront fee. It's a second scam.

If you were scammed

  1. Stop sending money right away.
  2. Save chats, transfer records, transaction hashes and account details.
  3. Report it to your local police and your national fraud reporting service.
  4. Contact exchange support with the addresses involved.
  5. Ignore anyone offering paid “recovery”.
